My mother and I had been wanting to stop by here for so long and we finally did it this afternoon. And it was wonderful. We each had a traditional Philadelphia steak and cheese sandwich and it was delicious I only wish we had gone there sooner. My mother had been in Philadelphia when she was younger and used to eat these all the time. She said it was like a little bit of memory!

First off, the place is extremely dirty. I didn't let that stop me from ordering, however certainly didn't give me a great first impression. I ordered a Provolone Wit and he New what I meant so I though we were on to something.  However, my "Taste if Philly" was not even close to the real deal. The steak seemed like ground beef which was over cooked and it came with American, not provolone as ordered. They had Amoroso signs, but mine was served on a sub roll. If the food was good, I'd overlook the gross atmosphere, however, sadly it was not.

I did ask the manager, who I just sat was extremely friendly and accommodating, if he was from Philly. He said the original owner was, but they were on their third owner now.

Sorry, but the taste of Philly didn't come close.

Tonight for dinner I wanted cheese steak, now granted I usually make my own at home because it's a quick and easy process. But this is a spot I have driven by several times and have been wanting to try. Today was that day.

Upon entering, I get a definite feel for Philadelphia, a place I love and has distinct meaning in my life, but I felt like I was walking into a old row home in that city with the little strip of buildings this place slides into. Tons of philly memorabilia on the walls from rocky to sports teams. A bit dingy and dark and definitely needs a facelift and some new ceiling tiles. But I suppose that's part of its charm. Only one lady behind the counter there was quick to greet us and ask what we would like with a smile. And I can always appreciate service like that.

I had a basic cheese steak with provolone, peppers, and mushrooms. Not the classic way to do it. But I'm glad they offered my preferences as an option there. Naomi got her favorite as well, a pizza steak. They even offer bottled fancy IBC root beer and creme sodas. Another of my favorites. She didn't ask for payment right away just asked if we were eating in or taking it home. We opted to eat in and she told us to see wherever we wanted and she'd bring our food over.

Now I'll reiterate as I always do. Sandwiches are my favorite thing. And I think I have a pretty good handle on where to find the best things between bread. And I'll tell ya. This is a damn close representation of a good philly steak. The one thing they do correctly right off the bat. They import their rolls. Amoroso is one of the best and it makes the flavor of the sandwich immediately better. There are a few different methods of making a philly steak. Sort of chopping the meat up and mixing your cheese in or leaving it more of a strip form. They use the prior method. I sort of wish it weren't peppers and mushrooms weren't from a can. But I did expect that given this is a quick bite place and not a fine dining experience.

All in all I truly enjoyed it. Paid for my meal afterwards, 22.50 for two sandwiches and two drinks. Right around what you'd pay in Philadelphia as well. If you enjoy a good sandwich. This is definitely a place to try. I know I'll make a second trip myself. And it won't take 4 hours to get there.

My friend is from Philly and he liked it. Needs a little salt. I added Sriracha to mine later on and it tasted a lot better. Know it's not the norm but would love to see them add hot sauce. Onions and peppers tasted fresh when we came. The place is definitely aged on the inside but that's how you know you're getting good food ;)
